The tranquil neighbourhood of Tai Hang has become a bit of a hipster hangout in recent years. Though the crowds are starting to get word of the boutique stores, artisanal coffee shops and restaurants that have sprung up in the area, the area has retained its friendly, close-knit community vibe. For one of the best places to experience the charming character of the neighbourhood, you’ll want to head to All In Burger & Bar.
Started by three friends, Lew Low, Sean Cheung and Jason Chan, All In Burger & Bar was inspired by the phrase, ‘All in or nothing’, which also represents Lew, Sean and Jason’s determination to open a casual gastropub amid Hong Kong’s competitive dining scene. Luckily, a background in hospitality has helped them find great success. Best friends, Lew and Sean, previously worked together as bartenders in Causeway Bay, and over the years have opened several F&B ventures including Italian private kitchen, Zone D Ristorante, and fine dining venture, La Bon Restaurant & Lounge. At All In Burger & Bar, they’ve revealed their passion for serving affordable, accessible food, handcrafted with care and integrity.
Together they decided that freshly made gourmet burgers, a food they shared a love for, would be the star of their menu. However, All In burgers are an upgrade on the ubiquitous fast-food item, transforming it into an artisanal product that takes advantage of premium ingredients from Hong Kong’s local purveyors. As such, the patties are formed by hand daily, the buns come from a small bakery in Tai Hang and the vegetables are picked up directly from the local wet market.
The beef burger is the star: a thick and juicy patty, caramelised on the grill, blanketed in melted cheese and served with a tangle of sweet onions underneath a soft potato bun with thick-cut potato wedges on the side, dusted in paprika for a spicy kick.
If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for the fish burger instead, which features a crunchy golden brown battered fish fillet with fresh lettuce and tomato. Alternatively, try the crab burger: a sizable crab cake sandwiched between toasted sesame buns. The same fresh crab meat stars in the bite-sized crab poppers, which are served with housemade tartare and finished with a squeeze of lemon. Elsewhere on the menu, you’ll find scotch eggs, spicy chicken wings, fish ’n’ chips and hot dogs. Wash it all down with the premium craft beers, spirits and affordable wines by the glass on offer.
All In’s open-air setting invites you to linger for hours over your meal, and while there’s not much in the way of virtuous dining on the comfort food-heavy menu, the fresh ingredients and care in sourcing will make sure you leave with a spring in your step. Situated on a quiet lane surrounded by boutique shops and cafes, it’s easy to see why All In Burger & Bar has become one of the area’s most popular hangouts – a neighbourhood attraction that just happens to serve one mean burger.
