While over-the-top decor may have a bad rap in today’s age of minimalism, the irresistible charms of the Alice-in-Wonderland-esque Tea Saloon by Another Fine Day make this one cafe that defies the phrase ‘less is more’. For those who enjoy the daintier side of life, this delightful showroom is a window into a world of parasols and summer soirées, a Victorian-era tribute where every day feels like a garden party.
Tucked away in Mid-Levels, the Tea Saloon is the third incarnation of the brand founded by advertising veterans, Karen Lai and Catherine Wong. The concept started over 10 years ago as One Fine Day, a women’s lifestyle store on Queen Victoria Street with a cosy tea corner, selling everything from books to wedding gifts to tableware. Closing due to construction, it was reopened as Another Fine Day on Prince’s Terrace, before extending to its current site on Peel Street as a full-service tearoom, Tea Saloon by Another Fine Day. A new co-owner, Teresa Cheng, who shares a joint vision for the new phase and expansion of the brand, recently joined Karen and Catherine.
When you enter the quaint cafe – via a neatly manicured private garden and patio – you’re met with an array of old-fashioned floral-upholstered sofas, rickety wooden chairs and old bookcases stacked with fancy china, books and vintage tableware. The eclectic room provides plenty of fodder for sneaking in the perfect Instagram shot, from the colourful candy-filled vases to the old-style chandeliers.
Naturally, the seasonally changing afternoon tea is the specialty on the menu: choose from the Ladies (more sweets) or the Gentleman’s (more savouries) set – each arriving with a set of vintage-style floral crockery on an Indian handmade tiered cake stand. The scrumptious afternoon tea includes croissant sandwiches filled with folds of ham and cheese, mini sliders, crab puffs and forest mushroom tarts wrapped in layers of flaky pastry.
From here, delicate desserts satisfy your sweet tooth, from pastel-coloured Frenchstyle macarons to warm and buttery scones served with homemade rose jam to spongy cupcakes swirled with bright frosting. The treats go down well with a soothing cup of tea, selected from the cafe’s collection of premium teas sourced from around the world. There is also Another Fine Day’s house-branded teas: nine varieties inspired by the nine Enneagram styles so that everyone can discover their favourite cup.
The dreamscape venue, which makes you feel as though you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, has made Tea Saloon by Another Fine Day a magnet for bridal showers and launch parties. With events and catering an ever-growing operation, the brand recently finished renovations on a central kitchen and atelier in Wong Chuk Hang, called Celebrations by Another Fine Day. This will be the source of bespoke cakes and specialty food products delivered around the city, as well as private events, parties and supper clubs. The new space is yet another manifestation of the company’s optimistic spirit and core philosophy: that every day is ‘another fine day’, as long as there’s tea, nibbles and good company involved.
