The best cooks learn from the best chefs. At The Golden Pig Food and Wine School, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from one of the best and brightest in the business, Katrina Ryan.
Katrina’s enviable resume includes three years as head chef at Neil Perry’s Rockpool where she mentored a young Kylie Kwong, and a role as personal chef to Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. She also found success in her own restaurant ventures together with her husband, Mark Ryan with The Pig and Olive – in Cremorne and Potts Point. A sea-change in 2000 saw Katrina’s career focus change, and she took up a role at the Spirit House Cooking School near Noosa, where she spent more than a decade perfecting the art of creating and teaching cooking classes.
This extensive experience has culminated in The Golden Pig Food and Wine School – a welcoming and warm place to eat, drink and cook. Created with her Building Designer husband, Mark Ryan, this cafe and cooking school is built with sustainability in mind and filled with lush vegetation that will make you feel instantly at homeGolden Pig’s food philosophy shares these values, leaning towards relaxed but refined meals that make the most of Queensland’s spectacular local produce. Katrina aims to source seasonal produce from small-scale local producers.

Her love of seasonality shines through in the inventive menu at the Golden Pig Cafe, which celebrates beautiful produce, expertly prepared but presented simply. You’ll find breakfast favourites such as the house-made muesli with poached pears, rhubarb and yoghurt, alongside dishes that take inspiration from Asia, including the Chinese roast duck toastie with chilli jam, provolone, parsley and coriander.
There’s a selection of salads that will keep you powering through the day, including the lamb, quinoa, wild rice and rocket salad with almonds, pomegranate, tahini, eggplant and a hit of preserved lemon. On any given day you’ll be treated to a seasonal special, such as a roast red onion and goat’s feta tart with prosciutto and fresh fig, or Katrina’s signature tea-smoked salmon.
Whatever you order at the cafe, you’ll be inspired to emulate Katrina’s cooking. It doesn’t matter whether you’re an absolute beginner or an experienced cook hoping to take your skills to the next level, Golden Pig will sharpen your culinary expertise.
The hands-on classes cover cuisines from around the world: learn to cook a Portuguese-style pork and clam stew, stir-fry up some Thai-style cashew chicken, or perfect a Gallic potato dauphinoise. If baking’s your thing, you can become a sourdough savant, brush up on your souffle skills or whip up some Moroccan-inspired almond pastries.
With such a beautiful space and variety of classes on offer, Golden Pig has built a reputation for hosting memorable birthdays, weddings and corporate team-bonding activities. Choose between a catered event or involve your guests in an interactive cooking experience; either way it’s the perfect celebration for foodies.
Golden Pig is more than just a cafe and cooking school: Katrina and Mark have combined their expertise to create a friendly, immersive space for food-lovers to congregate and enjoy eating, drinking and cooking together.
