Ben O’Donoghue has pulled yet another fantastic addition to Brisbane’s foodie scene out of his hat with Billykart West End.

While Ben now has his feet firmly planted in Brisbane it hasn’t always been that way. After completing his apprenticeship Ben worked in Perth and Sydney for a few years before heading across the pond. As Head Chef at the Monte’s Club in Knightsbridge he worked alongside Jamie Oliver and also assisted Oliver Peyton to open the National Dining Room at the National Gallery. He’s also appeared alongside Jamie Oliver on The Naked Chef although in Australia he’s most well known for Surfing the Menu with Curtis Stone and appearances on Masterchef.

With all that going on Ben could easily be forgiven for taking a step back from the kitchen but he shows no signs of slowing down. Billykart West End joins Billykart Kitchen in Annerley and the adjacent Billykart Provisions. Just like its sibling ventures, Billykart West End shares Ben’s signature laid-back style, love of fresh, local produce and distinctive flavours.

Set under the largest green wall in the southern hemisphere, Billykart West End focuses on seasonal produce with a strong focus on the origin on food. The menu features some of his favourite items along with some new items that have been ticking away at the back of his mind for some time. “I’m pretty excited. I get to do things I originally planned for Billykart Kitchen but couldn’t because of the restrictions of the building,” said Ben.

Billykart’s signature Aussie Asian eggs feature on the West End menu and are the perfect option for a lazy Sunday lunch with a spicy bloody Mary.

Sweet tooths will know they’ve arrived in the right place with a selection of waffles and pancakes. Think buttermilk and ricotta pancakes topped with coconut caramel banana or croissant French toast with strawberry compote and clotted cream. There’s even a savoury waffle option with hot smoked salmon, poached eggs and horseradish hollandaise.

For lunch there are plenty of light, healthy options that include a raw salad with kale, broccoli sprouts, dates, avocado and toasted seeds. There’s also a slow cooked lamb tartine with a fried egg, baba ganoush, tahini kefir and pomegranate.

While Billykart Kitchen only offers dinner once a week, at Billykart West End diners will be able to enjoy Ben’s night-time delights Tuesday through Saturday. Start with a salumi board or a few oysters served with habanero migonette More substantial offerings include sesame crusted ora king salmon, black sesame with zucchini noodles. The aroma wafting from the churrasco spit grill makes grilled meats and veggies a tempting choice. A popular option is the spit roasted chicken served with primavera, pancetta and charred gem lettuce.

You’ll have no trouble choosing the perfect beverage to accompany your meal with more than 20 wines available by the glass and even more available by the bottle. There’s also a tight cocktail list and a selection of craft beers.

Next time you’re in West End, drop past Billykart from a quick drink or to see what’s roasting on the grill.
