The Italian term ‘La Macelleria’ translates to ‘the butcher shop’, however don’t let this fool you – Brisbane’s Teneriffe store by this name is nothing of the sort. One step through the door of La Macelleria will show no evidence of chops or sausages, rather a delicious array of sweet Italian gelatos ready for the taking by the sunshine state’s hungriest.

The inner-city gelataria was opened in 2014 by Matteo Zini and Matteo Casone, who call Bologna – the capital of Italian artisan gelato – home. Attempting to escape the Italian economic crisis, the pair relocated to Brisbane, bringing with them their home-grown passion and expertise for gelato. Matteo and Matteo named their Brisbane venture after the first shop they opened in Bologna. Taking over the vacated space of a debunked butcher shop and filling it with Gelato making apparatus, La Macelleria was born.

Truly embracing their new home, the team at La Macelleria is committed to supporting the Queensland industry, sourcing all dairy from local Australian farmers and using mascarpone cheese and buffalo ricotta from a Brisbane-based Italian cheesemaker. New flavours are invented each week to keep things interesting, depending on seasonal inspiration and the freshest ingredients available to the team. Think raspberry cheesecake with fresh ricotta and raspberry coulis, or caramello salato with house made caramel and sea salt flakes.

The artisanal crafting of their traditional gelato happens on site in their open plan kitchen where you can watch the magic happen and learn along the way. Everything is made from scratch including nut pastes blended from roasted hazelnuts and almonds, so you can indulge with the knowledge that each slurp of delicious gelato is of the utmost quality. If icy cold treats aren’t for you, swing past for an espresso, served the Italian way of course.

By popular demand, La Macelleria is set to open its second storefront in September in West End. With two locations to choose from, you’ll no doubt work your way through all the delicious flavours and sorbets in no time – when you do, be sure to try the equally as delectable cakes and sticks made entirely from gelato, or brioche buns filled with gelato goodness for a little taste of Italy in the heart of Brisbane.
