Since 2002 Gelato Messina has made a name for itself throughout Sydney and Melbourne. Crowds flock to each and every store for a taste (or a tub) of its inventive gelato flavours made with artisanal techniques. Now it’s Brisbane’s turn to experience the magic of Messina.

Gelato Messina started as a hole-in-the-wall gelateria in Darlinghurst, however the demand for ice cream far outstripped the tiny store, with queues lining up down the street, patiently waiting for a flavoursome scoop. It’s all thanks to Nick Palumbo, his brother, Danny and business partners, Donato Toce and Declan Lee.

Nick began his gelato journey in Messina, Sicily. Upon moving to Australia, he landed first in Adelaide, before moving to Sydney where he opened Gelato Messina. While Donato is the head chef, he and Nick oversee the creative process together, always experimenting and designing new flavours.

“It’s not just the artisan technique derived from our origins in Sicily, but the mad obsession with making absolutely everything from scratch,” explained Nick.

The latest store in south Brisbane is much larger than the original Darlinghurst store – in fact, at 200sqm it’s the largest Gelato Messina so far.

With more space comes plenty of room for enjoying ice cream. Gelato Messina Brisbane stocks the full range of 40 flavours, ranging from simple options like strawberry and lemon, to luxurious combinations like the ever-popular salted caramel and white chocolate, tiramisu with marsala and mascarpone gelato with biscuits soaked in coffee, and poached figs in marsala wine.

Nick and Donato’s inventive side mean that even once you’ve worked your way through all 40 flavours, there’s always something new to try. There’s always five weekly specials to try. To celebrate the opening of the first Brisbane store, the team created the Queenslandaarrr!!!! made from ginger gelato with pineapple cake and Bundaberg rum caramel.

Gelato Messina Brisbane will soon also be offering its sought after gelato making workshops. Once live these sell out fast.

With Brisbane’s tropical climate and long summers, Gelato Messina is a welcome addition to the foodie scene.
