Banter Bar and Seafood
708 Main Street, Kangaroo Point QLD
07 3391 7680
Kangaroo Point is one of the prettiest riverside suburbs in Brisbane, and now it’s also one of the best burbs for top-quality fish and chips.
Housed in a classic Queensland cottage with beautiful wooden floorboards and breezy rooms with whitewashed weatherboard walls – Banter Bar certainly doesn’t look like your average chippy. With Head Chef, Daniel Miletic (formerly of the acclaimed The Fish House in Burleigh), manning the fryer, it’s not your average fish and chips either.
The menu spans from fresh fish, oysters and local prawns (served with cocktail sauce, of course) to ‘Posh Fish Finger’ sandwiches, sweet potato scallops and superfood salad.
The motto at Banter Bar is ‘fish and chips are better with beer’, and to that end, there are a number of craft beers (as well as wine and cocktails) to whet your whistle, including brews from Helsby’s Ale House – located just next door.
While there is the option to take away your meal for a picnic at the nearby Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, dining in-house is a treat in itself.
If the weather’s warm (and when isn’t it in Queensland?), a refreshing Gin Cucumber Spritz is definitely a good idea. Take it out to the back deck or settle on one of the spacious tables indoors and, if you feel like adding some retro glamour into your day, enjoy it alongside a prawn cocktail – served in a tall glass, just how it should be.
Fish and chips might be a simple food, but when it’s done well (and served with a delicious drink on the side), it’s almost impossible to beat.
