Where to stay
Maya Ubud Resort & Spa
Jalan Gunung Sari, Peliatan, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia
Set deep in lush tropical rainforest, Maya Ubud Resort & Spa has the regal atmosphere of an ancient temple. But you’ll find no intricate carvings or traditional paintings here, just modern, linear architecture that immerses you in the surrounding landscape.
Designed by award-winning architectural firm, Denton Corker Marshall, the layout of the resort draws on old Balinese lore: villages usually run along a sacred north-south axis, creating a link between the mountains in the middle of the island – thought to be the land of the gods – and the seas, the realm of demons. Maya’s central walkway connects the public spaces, while the villas are nestled into the greenery on either side.
Indonesian design has also inspired the contemporary interiors. Weathered and recycled timbers have been used to create furniture throughout, and traditional fish traps and baskets have been fashioned into dramatic lamps, creating a unique fit-out with a distinctly local flavour. The warmth of orange, gold and turmeric upholstery will quickly make you feel at home.
Choose a Superior or Deluxe Room facing east and you’ll wake up each morning to the sight of the Petanu River valley below, or facing west to watch the sunset over Peliatan’s rice paddies. For a true Maya experience, it’s hard to look past the Pool Villas, complete with your own private terrace, plunge pool and outdoor shower – all that’s needed for relaxing in the Balinese heat. When the day’s done, retreat to a canopied four-poster bed for a good night’s rest.
For a truly special stay, book the luxurious Presidential Villa. With a panoramic view over the river valley, a private swimming pool, living and dining areas and a separate guest villa, you won’t want to leave.
Venture outside your accommodation to the resort facilities, and you’ll be rewarded with a renowned spa, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a tennis court and complimentary yoga classes. Cool off after your sweat session or continue your post-spa bliss at the resort’s most spectacular features: the two infinity pools, one by the riverside and the other reaching out from the cliff above.
Get out into the beautiful surrounding hills of Ubud with guided treks and cycling tours, which will lead you through rice paddies, temples and villages. If you’re trying to balance work with play, Maya Ubud makes it easier with a specialised business library, kitted out with Apple iMacs and high speed internet.
Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the cuisine of Bali with Maya Ubud’s cooking classes, where Balinese chefs will show you how to prepare local favourites using herbs and spices picked from the Maya garden. When it comes to dining, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Sample the elegant offerings at signature restaurant Maya Sari, try the teppanyaki at Asiatique and fill up on conscious cuisine at the health-focused River Cafe. Start and end your evening with a tropical cocktail at Bar Bedulu, soaking up panoramic views over the valley.
Subtle and sophisticated in design with a spectacular setting, Maya Ubud’s elegant villas, diverse restaurants and thoughtful facilities will satisfy your every need and want.
