Milk & Madu
Jl Pantai Berawa 52, Canggu, Bali, Indonesia
There are no walls at Milk & Madu. The Berawa cafe, known for dishing up beautiful breakfasts, lovely lunches and carefully crafted coffee, takes open dining to a new level, bringing the outdoors in for a relaxed dining experience any time of day.
After the success of their first venture, Watercress, Pablo Fourcard and Jordie Strybos decided to open another venue in the Canggu area, which they noticed had a growing community. With a lot of young and creative energy circulating Berawa, they knew this was a good place to open something equally inspiring.
The unique venue was designed entirely by Pablo. He took the traditional concept of a ‘Joglo’ and modernised it, creating a space where everyone was welcome. Cooling stone floors and timber roofing evoke images of island huts, while the open sides allows natural breezes to flow right through, providing relief from the sometimes overwhelming Balinese heat. Slide into one of the cushioned benches, or pull up a chair at one of the wooden tables for a delicious start to the day.
Fresh and abundant is the theme of the menu, with local produce popping up in every dish. Pablo and Jordie understand the importance of good food, and recognise the importance fresh ingredients can play. This idea also inspired the name: Milk & Madu translates directly to milk and honey.
Breakfast is served until midday, so don’t worry about sleeping in and missing out. Start with a coffee: it’s some of the best on the island. Pablo, Jordie and the team work with esteemed barista Katie Allen from Revolver, using her beautiful beans and special latte glasses, imported directly from Australia.
When it comes to the food, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re feeling like eggs, opt for the dukkah poached eggs with crispy polenta, marinated peppers, watercress and feta, or the burrito with scrambled egg, beans, bacon, corn salsa, cheddar, avocado and sour cream. For a sweet start, turn to the charred French toast with Bedugul strawberries, candied walnuts and honey cream, or the baked breakfast berry crumble with toasted coconut and house-made yoghurt.
If you crawl out of bed later than expected, the lunch menu will not disappoint. Order the ultimate veggie burger with cheddar, tomato, mixed greens, house onion jam and aioli, or a rustic flatbread pizza with French brie, caramelised onion, sweet dates and wilted rocket. On your way out, grab a sweet treat from the cabinet, such as the lemon poppy loaf, a New York–based cheesecake, chocolate chip cookies or lemon tarts.
Not one to rest on their laurels, the team have also partnered with Bali’s first smoothie bowl shack, Nalu Bowls. Sitting adjacent to Milk & Madu’s joglo, it introduces yet another contender for battle of your breakfast, serving all six legendary recipes.
Milk & Madu is a match made in food heaven. The unique space, marvellous menu and splendid spot in the middle of Canggu combine for a cafe experience that’s hard to beat.
