It may be windy outside, but watching an incredible sunset from a cosy table behind the floor-to-ceiling windows, is simply one of Adelaide’s best experiences. First opened in 1982, Windy Point Restaurant and Cafe boasts breathtaking panoramic views of Adelaide from St Vincent's Gulf to the Hills.
Dreamt up as a drawcard destination for Adelaide by well known local businessman Bill Sparr in collaboration with then Premier Don Dunstan in the late 70s, Windy Point Restaurant was designed to take full advantage of the extraordinary views from the Adelaide Hills. The view alone could never ensure longevity and so owners Daniel Sparr and Justin Miles continue to match the stunning view with the highest possible standards of cuisine and service. Multiple awards and more importantly, full tables pay testament to their success.
Adelaide born and raised, Justin first honed his culinary skills at Mistress Augustine’s under the direction of Ann Oliver. He then travelled to London, working in the Terence Conran designed Bibendum Restaurant. His work at the Noosa Springs Golf resort and the New South Wales ski fields has resulted in Justin joining an elite group – those winning Restaurant and Catering awards in three Australian states. The high point is naturally Windy Point’s Restaurant of the Year award in 2013.
At Windy Point, you have the option of dining in the formal Restaurant or the more casual Café. No matter which you choose, you can be certain that the produce – and wine – is local. Justin sources South Australian beef, poultry, seafood, dairy, fruit and vegetables, with Udder Delights and Hindmarsh Valley Dairy supplying cheese and olives coming from Patlin Gardens Olives just to the north of the city.
You’ll find Barossa Farm chicken, Smoky Bay oysters, and Spencer Gulf prawns on the menu. In the Restaurant try the Flinders Ranges’ Orroroo Kangaroo Saddle on baba ghanoush with carrot salad, shaved baby beetroot and Persian feta or the incredible St Vincent’s Gulf snapper carpaccio with squid ink aioli, smoked paprika oil and crispy citrus.
If you’re having a relaxed meal in the Windy Point Cafe be sure to try the duck legs with cavolo nero, pearl barley and hazelnuts. There’s also a selection of small plates so you can try a few. Choose from wagyu sliders with avocado, rocket, bacon, relish and fries or saffron paella with squid, chorizo, chicken, tomato, peas and manchego.
Daniel and Justin know that discerning Adelaide diners expect nothing but the best – so that’s exactly what they provide. Both the Café and the Restaurant are also available to be booked for events. Windy Point will provide delicious cuisine for your guests who’ll just need to avert their eyes from the unrivalled views of Adelaide, the Gulf and Hills to tuck in!
