Larry Piscioneri grew up by his mother’s side in the kitchen, always fascinated by the food she was cooking. When he reached his teens and was searching for his ‘passion’, his mother pointed out to him that it had been there all along: cooking. For the last 10 years Larry has been the captain of Martini Ristorante, serving food that speaks of his Italian heritage, while incorporating a modern twist.

Larry’s culinary journey began at the godfather of Italian restaurants – DaClemente. It was here that Larry honed his skills and served famous diners such as Ayrton Senna, Barry Humphries and Cliff Richard… just to name drop a few. Larry moved on to various restaurants, but held the ultimate dream of owning his own place. He stumbled on what was once Martini’s Cafe, and Martini Ristorante as we know it was born.

Larry sources just about everything locally, although a few concessions are made for special ingredients – Italian balsamics are hard to beat, after all. Larry’s Southern Italian roots are on show in his cuisine, which is rustic and yet modern, reflecting a childhood filled with good food, most of which was homegrown.

Many of Martini’s regular customers have never laid eyes on the menu – they just ask Larry to feed them, and he delivers. There’s a tremendous amount of trust in his ability, and it’s well earned.

The perfect place to start your Martini Ristorante experience is with an affettato – a charcuterie plate consisting of San Daniele prosciutto, housemade chilli and fennel cacciatore salami, roast porchetta, Sardinian castell sardo pecorino, housemade giardiniera and flatbread.

Following that you should sample the housemade wagyu brescola, pumpkin arancini or housemade goat meatballs with polenta croutons. For more traditional diners a selection of pastas and desserts are also on offer, as well as hearty Italian meals like Porchetta al Forno – slow-roasted pork belly with caramelised peaches, wilted radicchio, pork glaze and vincotto.

For dessert there’s the ever-popular tiramisu, or the crema di limoncello with fresh berries and housemade honeycomb.

The extensive wine list offers drops from the Barossa to Barolo, so there is something for every palate and price point. A generous offering of beers are also available as well as a range of Italian amaros and spirits to finish.

A state of the art private function room is available for hire, serving up to 80 guests with sit down service, or 120 for a cocktail-style event. For a smaller group (of 10 or more), consider a ‘chef’s table’, or choose your own individual set menu, perfect for making decisions easier and leaving more time for socialising.

Guests are treated like family here; there’s a focus on the importance of making every guest feel truly welcome. As the menu proclaims, Italian food is not just about eating, it’s about ‘gioia della tavola’ – the joys of the table!
