Inspired by exquisite antique pharmacy cabinets that grace the front bar, Apothecary 1878 is a wine bar and restaurant that harks back to beau monde late 19th century Europe.
Discovered buried beneath layers of dust at the back of an Adelaide antique shop and originally from a London apothecary, the antique cabinets feature pure crystal drawer handles and 18 carat gold leaf inscriptions, rescued and lovingly restored. The Apothecary 1878 was established in December 2002.
The front bar further embraces the European feel with tumbled marble floor tiles throughout and classic Thonet chairs at solid marble and brass tables. Antique chaise lounges and seating feature in the upstairs Champagne Bar and Lounge, The Dispensary, while the entire heritage-listed building is defined by rustic brickwork, rich velvet carpet and imported chandeliers.
The award-winning wine list features well known varieties, alongside boutique, lesser known producers. You can pop down to the cellar restaurant to check the collection, curated by Maître Licoriste, Paola Coro, or take a seat at the bar and peruse the enormous list. Order a spritzer to drink while you’re reading – it’s the house favourite and with this many options, you’ll need it. If it all seems too much, turn to the bartenders – they are very knowledgeable and can point you in the right direction.
The entire beverage list is carefully crafted, with a nod to the classics. It is constantly changing and evolving as the expert team searches for obscure and interesting drops from around the globe. However, their overall focus is on Australian varieties and their European equivalents. By developing relationships with local producers, Apothecary is able to offer wines that are small batch and limited release, meaning you can try something unique every time.
Head down the stairs to a brickwork basement and admire the cellar before settling in for a night of delicious dining in one of Apothecary’s many dining spaces.
The menu showcases local South Australian produce, drawing influence and inspiration from the kitchen team’s Middle Eastern and European heritage.
Frank Hero leads the culinary charge. Originally from Kurdistan, he trained in some of Adelaide’s best restaurants, including Hentley Farm and Eros Ouzeri, before arriving at Apothecary.
Start your dining experience with Coffin Bay oysters, served with ‘acids and oils’ or duck liver pâté, before moving onto the entrées, which include escargot, poached quail egg, Brussels sprouts and Béarnaise or smoked eye fillet carpaccio, mustard truffle oil and pickled shallots. Don’t forget to leave room for the chargrilled wild venison, roasted plum, juniper, celery and horseradish custard, or Murray Lands lamb loin, served with parsnip purée, sage and olive sauce.
As one of Adelaide’s premier restaurant and wine bars, Apothecary 1878 will take care of all your wining and dining needs. Pop by for a quick drink pre- dinner or stick around for the full experience – either way, it’s a night well spent.
