Andre’s Cucina & Polenta Bar prepares quality produce, exquisite coffee and signature polenta alongside a delicious offering of local and international wines, all designed for sharing, Italian family style.
After travelling extensively and living in Europe throughout his mid twenties, Andre Ursini returned to Australia with a strong desire to elevate Italian cuisine in South Australia. In 2009 he competed in the first series of Masterchef Australia and the following year he opened Andre’s Cucina & Polenta Bar. In consultation with Matt Preston, and keen to have an eponymous name for his first establishment, the internationally unique concept of a Polenta Bar was born.
With a philosophy that ensures a food and wine experience that pays homage to regional Italian cuisine, Andre’s Cucina & Polenta Bar serves fresh, seasonal, traditional fare made with the best ingredients. The dishes require great skill whilst also incorporating strong elements of contemporary techniques.
Head Chef, Patricia Streckfuss, started cooking 10 years ago at 15 years of age and has cooked in Melbourne at Jamie Oliver’s first ‘15’ Restaurant as well as for two years under Riccardo Momesso. The menu is continually changing, respecting seasonality at all times.
Seasonal fresh produce from Andre’s Adelaide Hills, Kangarilla and Glenelg Italian kitchen gardens is organically grown, picked, prepared, cooked and served on the plate. Beef, lamb, fish, goat, rabbit and venison are also sourced locally from the Fleurieu Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Riverland, Port Lincoln and One Tree Hill.
Gnocchi is made fresh daily but does not appear on the menu. Available by request it is offered to guests until sold out on the night. Whole baby goat legs are also a highly sought after specialty. The pasta, bread, Italian sausage, bresaola and grissini are also freshly made in house.
The majority of guests choose the Menu Fisso, allowing the kitchen to cook for them. It is akin to eating a feast in an Italian home and you are able to experience a selection of the best dishes for the day. Commencing with starters of Carpaccio, Assaggini grazing boards or what’s on the Consigli (recommendations) blackboard, guests are then offered ‘a fresh pasta interlude’ followed by a feast of carne, pesce, polenta and contorni. The culinary journey concludes with Andre’s famous zeppole (Italian donuts) or pasticcini selection (hand crafted Italian miniature pastries).
Andre’s Cucina & Polenta Bar offers weekly wine specials from local wine regions, small artisan producers and unique imports.
With business opportunities growing, in 2013 Andre established both a catering company and a wholesale company. Andre’s Cucina as a brand has grown from 15 to 40 staff members in five years of operation and now provides remote mine camp catering and management, wedding catering, corporate food services as well as wholesaling pastries, bread and pasta.
At Andre’s Cucina & Polenta Bar guests are treated to a shared Italian feast in a fun and convivial atmosphere steeped in professionalism and vibrancy. Bookings are recommended with two sittings offered on Friday and Saturday evenings.
