Nestled on the corner of the picturesque Whitmore Square in Adelaide’s ‘green hippie’ part of town, Cafe Troppo is a sustainable cafe that locals flock to for reliable grub, relaxed vibes and a happy family of staff.

Boasting an ethos centred around sustainability, the environment and the community, Cafe Troppo is an extension of the family’s neighbouring architecture business, Troppo Architects, which specialises in sustainable design.

The coffee at Cafe Troppo is organic and fair-trade, brewed on the South Coast at De Groots. The team uses local biodynamic milk from Paris Creek (South Australia), organic Australian soy and hand-blended, single-origin organic teas from the Barossa Valley.

The menu is seasonally based, and ingredients are mostly sourced from local markets and growers. Some of the herbs and leaves are even foraged from the gardens surrounding the café. Café Troppo’s menu offering is largely vegetarian, however, delicious (and underused) ethically sourced meats like kangaroo and wild boar often make a welcome appearance.

The brekkie stacks and coconut rice porridge (a regular special) are popular morning choices, while daily-changing muffins (think zucchini and nutmeg) make for an ideal takeaway snack. The seasonal salads are up there with some of the healthiest and most delicious combinations in the city; paired with a house-made sausage roll or pie you’ll be in lunch-heaven.

During the weekend, Troppo’s seasonal all-day brunch menu makes a colourful entrance. Tuck into a variety of healthy, wholesome plates including scrambled chilli eggs with purple slaw and aioli; greens and roasted seasonal vegies with a soft-poached egg and herby organic feta; or a spelt flour-base brekky pizza topped with red sauce, swiss brown mushrooms, spinach and san jose bacon, plus melted provoletta cheese and a poached egg.

The fit-out is fascinating, with plants and eco-wares everywhere you look. The ceiling is a rustic selection of sticks and twigs, while lush succulents find homes in the bases of tables. Repurposed redgum counters stand proud, while natural timber accents, concrete walls and corrugated plastic sheets clash effortlessly for a modern meets sustainable vibe. This fabulous little space even doubles as a music venue and bar by night, where local beers and wines are poured.

Offering nutritious, simple, low-fuss and just darn good grub, Cafe Troppo is a delicious slice of sustainable serenity in Adelaide’s bustling CBD.
