Prohibition Liquor Co.
22 Gilbert Street, Adelaide SA 5000, Australia
An after-work G&T is always a treat but, for our Adelaide friends, that treat just received a serious upgrade. Say hello to Adelaide’s first CBD distillery door and tasting room, courtesy of the award-winning spirit makers at Prohibition Liquor Co.
Since its inception in 2015, the distillery has been accumulating accolades from spirit competitions the world over. This includes three gold medals from the Melbourne International Spirits competition in 2017 for their Prohibition Gin, the New York International Spirits Competition for their Bathtub Cut Gin, and the International Wine & Spirit Competition for their unique packaging.
With a specially designed tasting room and cafe kitchen, the new venue is a far cry from their original premises at distiller Adam Carpenter’s house in Ovingham. While they still produce their core gins off-site, a still will be arriving later in the year for the production of unique, small-batch spirits. “At this stage we are still distilling at Applewood in Gumeracha,” Adam says. “However, the plan is to be distilling with a new still in Gilbert street before the end of 2018, at which stage our production from start to finish will be done at Gilbert Street – including all production for local, interstate and overseas markets”
Gin flights and creative gin cocktails are all on the menu, which includes espresso martinis and collabs with artisan icy pole makers, Popsicool. They also serve impressive bar nibbles created with produce from the Adelaide Central Market. “Food wise, we are serving bar plates including antipasto boards, cheese boards, dip plates, bruschettas, etc,” Adam says. “But the heroes are our gourmet toasties on high-quality sourdough bread, which includes a gorgonzola and Serrano Jamon toastie, a chargrilled eggplant, feta and house-made pesto toaste, and a sopressa, provolone, tomato and olive toastie.”
Prohibition Liquor Co.’s tasting room is open Thursday to Sunday. For more details, check out their website.
